Halloween (2007)

A remake of the movie Halloween is coming soon (to be released Halloween this year, apparently). Directed by Rob Zombie and starring Scout Tyler-Compton as Laurie (what kind of name is Scout Tyler-Compton?).

They are REMAKING the movie, Halloween? Wow... I didn't think that it would need a remake of it. That is a classic.

It is, aye? I like the original movie, but I'm not gonna get mad if there's a remake or nothing. It's not like the original will suddenly disappear off the face of the earth if there's a new version. It may be good, may not... we'll see.

Apparently Michael Myers will be driven by anger more than in the previous movies. That's just the word "on the street".

No, I'm not mad... I just don't think that there is a need for a remake. Why take a good movie and redo it? If they decided to remake Star Wars, then I would have issues.

I have a feeling that they will make this remake a much darker version... and it will be a lot bloodier.

With Rob Zombie directing, no doubt it will be a lot bloodier. Come to think of it, I don't think the original movie has that much blood at all.



You're right, a Star Wars remake would get me mad... I mean... I don't know if I'd be MAD mad, I'd pretty much laugh at the very idea of it. I can't think of many movies that I'd feel the same way about, though.

And I don't think that the original was bloody, but you know what I meant, right?

Well, that was my point earlier... if you remake something, the original still exists... so I'm cool with it. I can just ignore the remake if I want. But I can see why some of these piss people off. I mean, Hollywood is so uncreative now, there's rarely anything good to watch.

I'm no fan of horror movies, at all... but Halloween, and Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street... those are classics.

I remember when they remade "The Omen" and I was shocked. Why mess with a cult classic? And, it bombed. People who are true fans of the original really didn't like it... there was too much changed, etc....

So, I'm wondering if they will do the same with Halloween. It remains to be seen. I will read the reviews... but, I won't see it.

I'm getting kinda excited about watching this movie now...

Okay, so I saw this last night. Overall, it gains a "dope" in the Gaboman rating system, but it wasn't without a number of flaws that purists will whine about (and me too).

I'm not one who cares if a movie is remade, or lame sequels or prequels are made, or anything like that, because at the end of the day, I have more interesting things to worry about. So anything I say here is just shit I noticed more than me really caring.

First off, as a young boy, Michael Myers looks like a girl. I don't really care, though, 'cause the kid was fun to watch.

Also, Rob Zombie seems to have just found a book called "Idiots Guide to Serial Killer Psychology" and shoved all of the most obvious crap into the movie (Michael Myers' dad's dead, his mum's a stripper, his sister's a bitch, his step father's abusive and he, himself, kills and tortures animals. We get it already! Fucked up childhood!).

That's my only beef with the period introducing his family and his earliest victims.

While he's in the hospital, for some reason he talks plenty with Dr. Loomis, but doesn't remember the murders. Then he kills a nurse (which is pretty cool), but then one day says "I've got nothing more to say" and he doesn't talk ever again. I mean what the hell is that? I've got nothing more to say, duuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhh... shithouse writing.

I do, overall, like the demise of his family, though. They never explained what exactly happened to Laurie's parents in the original series, and this gave us a nice look into that.

Michael's escape, as with the original murder of his sister, are changed somewhat in this movie, but that's nothing that will really bother you. The escape was cool in itself, and how he obtains his clothes when out of the hospital too.

I remember reading a review that complained about Michael's obsession with masks. I think that added a nice new angle to the story and the idea of his masks, though I think him explaining it to Dr. Loomis was lame as hell.

When Laurie enters the picture, the story runs similar to the original movie. Laurie drops off a key at the Myer's house, the kid she's babysitting that night walks with her and they talk about the boogieman. She goes to school, and sees Michael hanging around a few times. She goes babysitting, and babysits her friend's kid too, while she goes off to ride her boyfriend.

The dialogue, feel and everything was changed though. Laurie isn't as bookish or shy as she is in the original, even making some pretty racy jokes in front of her parents. I think the only thing they did to make her seem bookish was give her glasses and mentioned she didn't have a boyfriend. Weak sauce. I wasn't fond of how the character was written. I'd complain about the actress too, but no one would've compared to Jamie Lee Curtis, so it wouldn't be fair.

I like the idea of squeezing the whole of the original movie into the last 30 minutes or so of the new one... the pace is faster, and there are some awesome changes. Less suspenseful, no doubt, but after seeing the original 100 times it's not very suspenseful anymore anyway.

This version is a whole lot more bloodier than the original, of course. It's a good thing, too, because the original movie is pretty bloodless for a horror movie. Plenty of boobies too.

All that makes a pretty cool movie.
