TOKYO, Feb 13 (Reuters) - Great news for beer and milk lovers: A liquor shop owner in Japan's largest dairy farming region has stopped crying about local spilled milk and started making beer from it instead.

"We came up with the idea after hearing about surplus milk," said Chitoshi Nakahara, head of the Nakahara liquor shop on the northernmost island of Hokkaido.

Milk consumption has been declining steadily in Japan, and Hokkaido disposed of nearly 900 tonnes of milk last March due to over-production, according to the Japan Dairy Association.

Nakahara's new brew, "Bilk" -- a combination of "milk" and "beer" -- is about 30 percent milk. It also contains hops, and the production process does not differ much from that of regular beer, he said.

His shop started selling Bilk, which apart from a slight milky scent looks and tastes like ordinary beer, on February 1 after spending about six months developing the product with a local brewer.

Bilk is only available at six local shops or by mail order, but Nakahara is currently out of stock due to heavy media attention.

Don't worry if you can't get hold of any, though: Nakahara also sells beer brewed from another major Hokkaido product -- potatoes.

Well, it may taste just like beer but it sounds really gross. I know, don't knock it till you try it. But wouldn't the ingredients in the beer knock out the nutritional value of the milk?

Maybe the combo makes the milk even better for you.

BUT, then again, when I first heard what a Radler was I almost puked - til I tried it and thus began my love affair with the Radler:

half lager, half lemonade = delicious.

I'm not a big milk fan though so I'm thinking i won't like this one.

Anything a woman eats or drinks goes immediatly to the child she's breastfeeding. If she drank one sip of this "Beer/milk" her child would be drinking it too.

I still say it sounds really nasty.

Would you all be shocked to hear that I have never had any alcohol in my ENTIRE life!!?? Never been interested in the stuff. It does smell like baking bread to me though...Mmmm!

Honestly! Never have touched the stuff! Most of it smells pretty raunchy! Never saw what the attraction was to not being in control of myself...I had a sister who drank...it wasn't pretty!!

I'd rather put alcohol in charge of me than myself. It makes better decisions.

But I know lots of people who've never had a drink.
