The grackles have beautiful feathers on their heads. Do they bother the smaller birds?

No, but they eat all the worms and stuff, and all the other birds will fly away. They come in a huge flock of about 300 and cover the ground, just overwhelm the yard. You know when they show up.

But it's for one day at most, and then they leave for months.

Saw some brilliant birds in the past 2 days here around my place. Yoyo's passing her phone onto me this week, so after that I'll have a 3.5 megapixel camera on me at all times and I'll be sure to take the pics. The one I saw earlier today was a magpie, but it had a kind of blue tinge to it. Yesterday I saw a white bird with black wings, black head, and a very striking red beak. Gorgeous.

I'm totally going to get into this bird watching stuff.

Bird watching is good because it's very time consuming. It's an ongoing years long endeavor, and just when you give up and think you won't see anything else, up pops some strange bird you never even seen in a book, and you go into nerd mode and freak out.

It's fun because you learn more and more, and the birds you do know, you notice brand new art type stuff on them all the time.

ps I saw/heard a wodpecker near downtown San Diego recently. Never seen one down here before

All of them are in my yard, except for the Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher was at work. The Hawks are at a baseball park near work, and the red headed woodpeckers are at a nature walk north of Tulsa.

Ron we had a woodpecker in our oak tree for a few days about four years ago. I never saw him again after that. I blame all the feral cats. There are 9 of them now:
Blix-the daddy/uncle/grandpa
Waffle-his sister/momma
Falaffle-sister/momma
Pseudo-blix-offspring of blix and one of the above
Kerbople-falaffle's daughter
Kitla-one of the gal's teen daughter who is a kitler
3 little kittens and we can't tell who the momma is

I am very very lucky to live where I do, being a birder. Lots of east/west birds converge here, as well as north/south birds.

We get a good amount of different birds around our place too, but none as beautiful as those ones.

Ours is some sort of west north east... thing... no doubt.

First good pic I'v had of one of these, a Summer Tanager.
