| Chan and Li Make 'Kingdom' Hot A major-studio feature starring two Chinese actors -- something that in itself would have been unthinkable even a few years ago -- wound up at the top of the U.S. box office over the weekend. Not only did The Forbidden Kingdom bring together Jackie Chan and Jet Li, but it was also produced entirely in China mostly with Chinese crews, again something that would have been unheard of until recently. Finally the martial arts film was aimed at a family audience -- without the bloody violence of virtually all previous films of the genre. Nevertheless, it wound up with $21.4 million, at the high end of analysts' expectations, handily beating Universal's Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which many analysts had suggested was the film most likely to come out on top. Instead, the R-rated comedy settled for second place with $17.7 million. Together the top 12 films grossed $82.88 million, up 13.46 percent from last year's $73.05 million. This was only the second week out of the past ten that the box office has seen a rise.
The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Media by Numbers (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date): 1. The Forbidden Kingdom, Lionsgate, $21,401,121, (New); 2. Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Universal, $17,725,330, (New); 3. Prom Night, Sony, $8,670,364, 2 Wks. ($32,133,926); 4. 88 Minutes, Sony, $6,957,216, (New); 5. Nim's Island, 20th Century Fox, $5,687,072, 3 Wks. ($32,894,115); 6. 21, Sony, $5,520,362, 4 Wks. ($70,004,505); 7. Street Kings, Fox Searchlight, $4,179,505, 2 Wks. ($20,058,143); 8. Horton Hears a Who!, 20th Century Fox, $3,511,834, 5 Wks. ($144,418,495); 9. Leatherheads, Universal, $3,049,465, 3 Wks. ($26,605,235); 10. Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, $2,970,848, (New).

| I would say it's not a movie you really need to see in the cinemas. No great special effects (remember the tiger scene in the first movie?) I'm waiting for a DVD rip to appear on the internet.
Wait, I mean... I'm waiting for it to come out on video and I'll legally purchase a copy.
Though I'm still waiting for the first Harold and Kumar movie to come out in Taiwan... technically, that is. Realistically, I bootlegged the shit out of that motherfucker.

| "Iron Man" pounds rivals at box officesSunday May 11 2:23 PM ET Superhero movie "Iron Man" pounded the competition at North American box offices for the second straight weekend, landing at No. 1 with $50.5 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates on Sunday. The movie about a comic book hero in a high-tech suit of armor took in $12,284 per theater at 4,111 locations, and saw its total box office rise to $177 million after only about 10 days in theaters. "Iron Man" blasted by two new entries this weekend, family adventure "Speed Racer" and romantic comedy "What Happens in Vegas," which battled for the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. "Speed Racer" finished in the second-place spot with $20.2 million in ticket sales to $20 million for No. 3 "Vegas," according to Sunday's estimates. But those figures could change when Monday's final weekend tallies are released. "Speed Racer" got off to a slow start for the big-budget film's backers at Warner Bros. who had high hopes the movie would prove to be a runaway hit for kids and their parents. "We were disappointed with the results over the weekend," said Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution for Warner Bros. However, Fellman said surveys of audiences leaving theaters showed they had positive reactions to the movie about a race car driver named Speed who must stop wealthy corporations from using profits to fix races. It was made by the directors of the "Matrix," brothers Larry and Andy Wachowski. "We're hoping, optimistically, that the movie can turn it around and sustain an audience into the summer but only time will tell at this early stage," Fellman said. While "Speed Racer" managed to claim the No. 2 spot, "Vegas" beat it on the basis of average sales per theater. "Vegas," which stars Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz as a pair of mismatched lovers who get married after a fling in Las Vegas, pulled in $6,221 per theater in 3,215 theaters compared to $5,605 per venue in 3,606 locations for "Speed." A spokesman for Twentieth Century Fox, which released "Vegas," called its performance a "great result" that surpassed expectations for what he said was a movie that cost a mere $35 million to make. By contrast, "Speed Racer" was estimated to have cost $150 million to make and another $100 million to market, according to a recent story in the Los Angeles Times. Rounding out the top 5 films this weekend were romantic comedy "Made of Honor," starring Patrick Dempsey, in the No. 4 spot with $7.6 million and a two-week total of $26.3 million. "Made of Honor" was followed by Tina Fey comedy "Baby Mama" with an estimated tally of $5.8 million and a cumulative total of $40.4 million after three weeks in theaters. "Iron Man" was produced by Marvel Studios and released by Paramount Pictures. "Made of Honor" was distributed by Columbia Pictures, and "Baby Mama" by Universal Pictures. | |

| I kind of have little interest in the Speed Racer movie. The cartoon was always one that I groaned at whenever it was on when I was young, and the movie kind of looks cartoonish and lame. | |

| Absolutely. I guess they were waiting to see if it would be a success first, but I bet now they're going to be doing 2 and 3 back to back.
I'm glad the Wichowski brothers got their asses reamed with Speed Racer like they did to us with Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions.

| Good call on that. The W Bros can kiss my ass. Speed Racer looked like Mario Kart. On a side note, I played Mario Kart on Wii all weekend. My mom got one for herself. It's sweet. Anyway, Iron Man was all around a dope flick. Filming sequels back-to-back is always tough though. Back To The Future 2 & 3... both were marginal. Two had its moments but just turned into a trailer for the third film, which was a shitty western with rehashed jokes from the first two. Matrix Reloaded & Revolutions... 'nuff said. The Potter movies are filmed with breaks in between. They seem to work alright, then again, there is source material already written. Wonder if the studio will let Favreau keep the reigns for the next two flicks... this franchise is already broke a quarter of a billion dollars worldwide in box office alone. With video game, DVD and random merchandising... shitballs. I doubt they'll mess with what works. Favreau will rock it. Another thing about an Iron Man sequel... Iron Man has real shitty enemies. Who will be up to bat? -HECK! | |

| All of Iron Man's enemies seem to be just... other folks in, like, evil Iron Man suits. It's true he doesn't have that many cool enemies.
I love Back to the Future. All of them. Maybe because I was still a young'un when they came out, I'm all pee-weed-out over them. Heh... I said 'weed.'
I reckon if the Iron Man director wants to come back, he's got the job...
