| 1984 sounds cool... plus if I just choose that book, then I have to make no real decision regarding the book we read. I'll buy it this weekend. I've got a 4 day weekend, so I won't be back 'till Wednesday. Maybe we'll start next week, then. Anybody who wants to join, join. If not.... what the hell're you lookin' at? Haven't you ever seen grown men starting a book club before? | |

| I bought 1984, so I'm good to roll if anyone else wants to. I've got other stuff to read, but I can read them simultaneously. Though one problem is that 1984 isn't really slipped into traditional chapters.... it'll be hard to say where exactly we should read up to. | |

| I made this forum so we can put each book in a new thread. That of course suggests we are able to read more than one book in a 5 year period, of course. It's a stretch, but I reckon we can make it. Okay, so we're doin' 1984 this time around. If no one else bothers joining, we'll do, like, Christine or something. | |

| So this forum went well... hmmm... Well, screw books anyway. TV's so much easier and more entertaining. People who say otherwise are elitists. | |

| Too little too late buddy! Don't come back in here, talkin' about joining us after you left us in the lurch the first time around. Don't even dare! You can't just play with our emotions like that; let us down, get our hopes up, just to let us down again. We're human beings! We deserve better. So what book were you thinking? | |

| There is an amazing book I read this semester by Loung Ung called First They Killed My Father: A Daughter Of Cambodia Remembers. It's her recollection of the genocide in the late 1970's in Cambodia when the Kohmer Rouge took over. She was about five at the time. I love it because she wrote it in a child like voice and in the present tense so she gets the message across much more effectively. When I first heard we had to read it I thought Great... another stupid book I have to read and write a paper over.... But I LOVED this book and was able to write an amazing paper. In fact Loung Ung came to speak at our school and I learned that she has written a second book and is working on a third. And since mom and dad are at a loss of what to get me for Christmas I told them all I wanted was her second book. | |

| There was a movie about those events when I was a kid, think it was called the Killing Fields. Was a true story about a reporter and a cambodian dude. Yeah, I looked it up, it is Killing Fields. That Pol Pot was a fregin monster. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Killing_Fields | |

| They showed that movie at our school but I had a class at the showing time so I didn't get to see it. In the book Loung Ung talks about her hatred of Pol Pot and how she wants to kill him herself. She was about 8 when she said this. That much hatred in an 8 yr old. She was 5 in 1975 so she's 37 now and you'd think all that trauma as a child would have made her a tattered and bitter woman. The truth is she is vibrant. It's amazing... she was able to joke around during her lecture and atthe same time make us cry. i just can't believe that someone who had gone through so much was able to grow into the woman she became. | |

| I never read it, just seemed too sexual, and I didn't want to read about death and cruelty and sex all mixed up. Probably a good book, I just can't get past the cover and the description of it. | |

| I thought it was a good book, but you might not like it. I wouldn't say it was really sexual. The first couple of chapters had some stuff in it but it just talk they don't actually do it. | |
