Got myself a bonsai tree

I'm a total amateur, but I figure that if I kill my little tree it's alright because it only cost ten bucks. I'm growing one because I want to make itty bitty Christmas ornaments and attach a very small swing to one of the branches.

In the Spring I'm going to try doing Root over Rock, which will take a few years, but in the end my little Maple tree should look like it's on a cliff face with its roots wrapping artfully around the rock. The rock that I found even has an indentation that might look like a little cave under the overhang of the cliff.

So am I wrong in thinking bonsaii aren't those other trees with little leaves? You know the ones I mean...

Grant, I know what you mean. I didn't know that there were bonsai trees with big leaves. It's really pretty though!!

Bonsai trees can be anything that is grown in miniature, about a foot tall or less. The most popular bonsai trees for beginners are junipers because they recover from mistakes so well, but this one is a Montpelier Maple.

Buy one! They are very cheap if you buy a young bonsai tree. Mine was $10. The trees that are several years old and have already had some shape them can be hundreds of dollars, though.

I wonder if you can smoke your bonsai... I mean, if you're going to try oregano, you may as well...


Speaking of which, how is it pronounced? "Or-Aye-Jen-Oh" or "Or-Ah-Gan-Oh"?

Or-AYE-Gan-Oh, though I think the British pronounce it differently from that.

I hadn't even thought about that. Damn, I can't have a Deciduous Christmas tree! I'll make sure to get a Fir next time that I buy a bonsai tree.

I think my tree died. It was really hot last year and the poor thing got cooked. Hasn't had any leaves form yet this summer.

So sorry. I planted lots of trees and used to brag about them like a person bragged about money, his house, kids, the wife, etc....

Which, of course is good, you brag about what you like.

Then the fire came and killed most of them 3 to 4 years ago.

Sucked big time.

But you move on and plant some more.

Plants are cool.

Planting stuff is fun. I'm all for it.

It's really fun to plant a tree and see it grow.

Starts small like a plant, then gets all giant and out of control.

And you see that "you" planted it, but it's so alive and real and beyond you that taking credit for it seems weird....
