Australia is Racist (KFC Commercial)

I have no idea who those people on that youtube clip are, but their view seems to mirror the general reaction that has resulted in this advert being pulled from Australian TV due it being "racist".

This ad is one in a series of ads for KFC called "KFC's cricket survival guide" for those of you that don't what cricket is, it's kind of like the longest game of baseball you ever watched in your life, with only two bases.

These ads all centre on that white guy in the youtube clip, trying to find ways to combine his two favorite things in life, cricket and KFC. He bribes a security guard at the cricket so he can get front row seats, tricks his mother-in-law with KFC so he can watch the cricket on TV, moves next to a KFC so he can get KFC during the ad breaks when the cricket is on, bribes his mates with KFC so they give him tickets to the cricket, basically him using KFC to get more and more cricket.

As far as I am aware, there is no African American cricket team, African American's don't play samba music, they don't watch cricket, this ad isn't being shown in America, so why are they offended by this ad? Ok sure, there's the adage of "black people like fried chicken" but to be honest, that isn't well known outside of the US, we don't have a lot of African Americans in Australia, we don't associate fried chicken with black people in a derogatory way. The only way I even know that fried chicken is a bad association is from you guys on this board.

The KFC he shares with everyone is called the "crowd pleaser" bucket. He is using it to bring two opposing team supporters together. As with any other sport with passionate supporters, sitting in a crowd of supporters for the other team can be daunting, he brings everyone together with chicken. Regardless of race, isn't that a good thing?

A lot of the overseas matches are daunting for Australian supporters, they could've done an ad about trying to diffuse the situation with KFC when your being shot at and your friends are being killed while walking the streets of Pakistan when the cricket is being held there, but I guess they thought a samba party was more TV friendly.

I think people are just way too sensitive, or am I over reacting to their over reaction?

Where are the African Americans in this ad? When I see a bunch of people wearing red, celebrating their national pride by playing Carribean music, I assume they are from Trinidad.

Oh geez. Had a long response, I'm gonna keep it simple and say people are too sensitive.

If I found the ad funny, I'd care. As it is, I'll just follow the crowd and say racist in the hope that I never have to see such an unfunny ad again. Realistically, though, I mean... in any advertisement for fried chicken, can you just not offer it to black people? Should ads for fried chicken only have white people in the from now on, just to be sure?

Also, the guy in the video was saying that it looks like he's acting civilized and they're not, so he gives them chicken to calm them down... but I didn't get that from the ad at all, I got the impression that the chicken was what made him part of the crowd. I could be wrong, it's not a very well made ad or anything.

This ad showed on all major TV stations for 3 WEEKS in Australia before it finally found its way on to the internet and the complaints started rolling in from America, in that 3 weeks, there was not a single complaint to any advertising regulatory board or KFC themselves.

Also, the team depicted is the West Indies team, I don't know that the West Indies even has the same chicken eating black people stereotype thing that America does.

If the Australians didn't find it offensive, the West Indies didn't find it offensive, why do KFC bow to pressure from Americans and pull the ad? Keeping in mind that Americans are neither depicted in the ad, nor is the ad screened in that country. It just makes no sense to me on so many levels.

Huh, so it is just an American sterotype. Well that is silly then if it is our sterotype and the ad wasn't even going to be played in America. Well I appologize that us Americans have forced our sterotype on to you Austrialians... here we go Americanizing everything and everywhere once again!

I am boycotting Austraila for it's racist ways. I will, however, continue to eat at KFC.

Personally I could much quicker live without KFC then without kangaroos, some of the best scuba diving areas in the world, beautiful opals, and AC/DC. So I think I will boycott KFC to balance out Whidden's boycott

But I will eat double the chicken!

Honestly, the pathetic lengths people will sink to just to complain about something. All I can say is thank god Malcolm isn't here or we'd never hear the end of this.

Very true, White Tiger. I think the main problem is this fried chicken for black folks thing is really, REALLY a US-only kind of deal, so a lot of Australians are like 'huh?' about it.

Like I've previously said though, it's not like the ad is particularly good so meh!
