Man Accused of Arranging Wife's Rape on Craigslist Jailed on $200G Bond

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Craigslist is again under scrutiny after a North Carolina man was charged with using the popular online classified site to fulfill his own fantasy by finding someone to rape his wife at knifepoint while he watched.

The woman said Thursday she has been "traumatized" by the attack, which she did not know about ahead of time. It happened a month after Craigslist agreed to overhaul its policing of sex ads following a slaying in Massachusetts.

"You don't know what I'm going through," she said, shaking her head as she stood on her front porch. "This is the worst thing that's ever happened to me."

The woman spoke to The Associated Press a day after her husband was ordered held on $200,000 bond on charges including first-degree rape. The AP, which generally does not identify victims of sexual assault, is not naming the man to avoid identifying his wife.

Police in Kannapolis, about 25 miles northeast of Charlotte, said the husband told them he found his wife's attacker by responding to at least two personal ads on Craigslist and acknowledged that she didn't know about it. They couldn't say if the attacker was paid.

"The guy is just a freak," Police Capt. Chuck Adams said.



Experts say the case is likely to lead to more questions for Craigslist, which has faced criticism for its "erotic services" section.

"We share the public's horror that such a crime was committed, and our heart goes out to the victim," Craigslist spokeswoman Susan MacTavish Best said in an e-mail Wednesday. But she qu for information about the ad in the North Carolina case.

"I want to know how the ad was articulated... I think this instance, like others, simply supports the demands and requests we've made over time for stronger oversight and scrutiny," he said.

Blumenthal said he will take Craigslist to court if it doesn't turn over the information.

That could mean another legal battle for the company, which sued South Carolina state Attorney General Henry McMaster over what CEO Jim Buckmaster viewed as the prosecutor's overzealous campaign against it.



The woman who was raped said she didn't want to discuss details about the case because it was too painful. She said friends and family members were helping her.

Police said she called 911 Sunday to report a man with a knife had raped her in the bedroom of her home. Police said the husband was in the room and the couple's two young children were home but unaware of what was happening.

The woman was treated at a hospital and released.

Investigators said they became suspicious of the 25-year-old husband when his statement didn't add up and there were no signs of forced entry at the house.

County court records he waived appointment of a public defender at a first hearing Wednesday, the day he was arrested.

Police are still looking for the attacker but aren't saying whether he'll face charges.

Found this article. I was going to say, I don't see how it could be questionable about weather of no the attacker would be charged. Glad to see he has.

Kannapolis police Friday arrested a 39-year-old man on charges that he raped another man's wife for pay.

Rodney Liverman of Norwood faces several charges, including first-degree rape. The victim's husband, who police say found Liverman on Craigslist, also is in jail.

Investigators say Liverman entered the victim's bedroom where she and her husband were sleeping and demanded money and sex while holding a knife to the victim.

A search warrant released Wednesday says the husband told his wife not to call police and to take a shower after the attack.

The search warrant also says that during the May 31 sexual assault in the married couple's bedroom, the intruder set his weapon down and the wife “was able to get the knife and throw it off the opposite side of the bed near her husband.”

The wife called 911 minutes after the attack. She and an investigator went to a hospital so evidence could be collected.

After a three-day investigation, the husband was arrested and charged with first degree rape and several other crimes, even though he did not physically take part in the assault, according to police.

The Observer doesn't identify the victims of sexual assaults, and hasn't named the husband charged in the assault to protect his wife's identity.

Liverman is being held in the Cabarrus County jail under a $250,000 bond.

That is just sick. I mean I understand some people get off on this kind of thing and if it has the consent of each party who I am to judge how they get their jollies? But to arrange for someone to rape your wife without her consent is just disgusting, how could anyone think that would be OK?

They should both be charged and jailed for this.

Exactly. I mean I totally agree with you. I'm not judging if it's something they set up as a couple, but just to say hey come rape my wife is sick.

That's sick. Though if I was the attacker I would claim that I was under the impression the wife was in on it and her fear was just surprise as she didn't know when it would happen. Or something like that.

This is definitely the weirdest story I'm going to read this week though.

Yeah I can the attacker could get away with it using that excuse, but as they say "ignorance of the law excuses no one". If I was the wife I would want them both charged no matter what.

But it's not ignorance of the law, it's ignorance that he was ACTUALLY performing a rape rather than playing it out.

I think if I was gonna pretend rape someone I would want the person to say yeah it's cool, just suprise me before I actually did it.

Jobs, garage sales, rape. Craigslist has it all.

What the hell are people thinking. Guess these weirdos would have found each other one way or the other. Craigslist is helping put crazy hands together though.
