Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

A lot of critics are calling this the best movie of the year. Is it really though?

No, of course not. Nothing's touching The Dark Knight. But it's definitely up there. I absolutely loved it, and so did the wife (who never even stays awake during movies let-alone likes them).

It's about a young man in India who's won big on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, and is thus suspected of cheating. The story jumps between the present - when he's being questioned by the police (and when he's actually on the show) - and the past - showing his childhood and youth, and explaining how he really knew the answers to the questions he was being asked.

It was a very nice flick, anyway. The last 10 minutes were so predictable it wasn't funny, but the rest of the movie was tops.

A good friend of mine saw this, and she can't say enough about it. I'd like to see it.

I think a lot of people will be turned off because of the all-Indian cast, but it really is wonderful.

Apparently it's not elligable for the foreign film award at the oscars, but I think that's alright. It could go for best movie. Won't win, though.

So is he visiting from India, or did he immiragte, is it the Indian version? Why would they think he cheated. I'm gonna have to find a trailor.

He's an Indian born, raised and living in India. Most of the movie is in English, but some of its subtitled (barely anything, most of it's english).

A little spoilerish, but not so bad (highlight to read):
The reason they thought he cheated: the host of the show fed him the wrong answer, and the guy figured that the host would give him the wrong answer. After using a 50-50, he gave the remaining answer (even though the host was pushing him to change his mind). After that they took a break for the day and the host lead him to be taken by the cops (he was tortured for a while, then questioned extensively).

So basically the movie is the police questioning the contestant and them going through the video of him on the show... and I think he's telling them his life story (some of which relates to the questions a little). Even if he's not telling them, we get to see highlights in his life from a little kid to adulthood. His brother really was a jackass, but the end made all that worth it.

I was just re-reading this thread as I only just watched the movie today and thought I would bring to attention Gabo's prediction that it wouldn't win best picture. Wrong on that count buddy!

Not much else I can say about the movie that everyone else hasn't said. The acting was very good, especially from the litle kids considering they are all just plucked from the slums. The ending was very predictable but over all the story was very well told and well written, I think it deserved the awards it got.

On another note, can I just say how much I hate whoever had the idea to have the Pussycat Dolls do the song from the movie. Did it really need to be skankified to be made in to a releasable song? Couldn't they have had an Indian Singer sing it and still have it released?

It's called Jai Ho, but Nicole sings it as Jay Ho and it just annoys the absolute hell out of me. Nicole thinks shes Indian and the dancing is soooooo lame.

You're right, I was completely and totally wrong. I honestly didn't think it had a chance.
