Football ( soccer) clubs throughout Europe are getting very worried about losing some of there top players due tp the olympic games next month. As the tournament kicks off in Beijing the English league, French league and German leagues will have started again while the Spanish, Italian, and Portugese teams will be in the middle of pre season training.
The tournament is causing a row for example Barcelona FC have warned all players that they must report to pre season and will be expected to complete the whole 5 weeks of pre season however one of those players Ronaldinhio has told Barcelona that he will instead be in Beijing for Brazil's olympic matches. A lot of English clubs are very unhappy as the support they thought they would get from soccers world governing body FIFA has been dashed with FIFA's president stating " that all players selected must attend the olympics" Thus a major club v country row will be erupting all over Europe as clubs and national associations will be desperate to keep thier players at such a vital stage of the season.
The olympic tournament has always been controversial.
Most of the major European soccer boards see it as a wasted venture and the players would be better suited at thier clubs. Also the tournamnet offers no financial incentives to the countries and has no affect over club rankings, the IOC recently suggested that the UK submit a British national team in 2012 which has put Scotland and England on a collision course with the Scottish football association saying they will have no part in such a team and warning that any Scot who plays for the olympic team will never play for Scotland again the British olympic bord will still name Scots in that team and fianlly the olympic tournamnet is bollocks Soccer has the world cup, the European championships ( which has only finshed), Copa America, Asian games the Olympic tournament comes way down the list.
Fans don't want it and don't care ( couldnt tell you who has won it ) clubs don't want it, the IOC seems out of touch about the make up of national teams so why in the hell have this waste of time and money.
