BEIJING, March 31 (Xinhuanet) -- April 1 -- April Fool's Day -- is the date of a scheduled news conference by American Thomas Beatie, the woman who became a man who became pregnant. Over the years Beatie has had various surgeries and hormone therapies, but retained his ovaries and uterus.

Gender reassignment surgery has been around for decades, but what's drawn international interest (and headlines like "He's Having Their Baby") is his claim, published in the gay rights magazine The Advocate, that he is five months pregnant. Beatie and his wife Nancy are expecting their first child on July 3, though they have given few other details.

The inescapable biological fact is that men cannot become pregnant. A few males in the animal kingdom do in a sense become pregnant (such as seahorses, which carry eggs in their pouch once they are deposited there by a female, then fertilize them and carry them to term).

Humans are another matter entirely; if Beatie has retained his babymaking equipment, then he is in fact still biologically a woman, not a man.

This is not the first time that a man has claimed to have been pregnant. Several years ago, a man named Lee Mingwei was touted on the website MalePregnancy.com as the first man to actually become pregnant. Visitors to the site can peruse Lee's pregnancy journal, see video archives of the progress of his pregnancy, and even watch a short documentary film on male pregnancy. The site addresses skeptics by stating that suspicions of a hoax are wrong: "Yes, Mr. Lee is really pregnant.”

Curiously, the website has been up since 1999, and Lee is apparently still pregnant! Either the poor man has been in labor for nearly a decade (talk about a rough delivery!), or the story is a fake. Of course, Mr. Lee doesn't exist; the Web site is a hoax created as performance art by an artist named Virgil Wong.

Is Beatie's pregnancy also a hoax? It seems likely, though many news media (including Good Morning America and ABC News) have taken the story seriously, interviewing doctors, surgeons, and psychologists about the dangers of a transgendered birth, both to Beatie and the unborn child. The story may be a publicity stunt by The Advocate, or a hoax in the style of veteran media prankster Alan Abel.

Has anyone seen anything on ABC or GMA about this? It sounds dubious to me.

I suppose its logistically possible to have an adadictomy without removing the uterus, but the hormones must be all out of whack at this point.

Thomas Beatie, a former woman who is now a pregnant man, defended his decision today to have a baby, saying he has a "right to have a biological child."

Despite removing his breasts, growing a wispy beard and legally having his gender changed from female to male, Beatie, 34, kept his female sex organs intact because he hoped to have a child some day.

After years of struggling with his sexual identity and deciding to live as a man, he did the most womanly thing possible -- he became pregnant.

In an exclusive interview with Oprah Winfrey, Beatie said his lifelong desire to have children motivated him to use his still working female reproductive organs when he learned that Nancy, his wife of five years, was unable to conceive.

"I actually opted not to do anything to my reproductive organs because I wanted to have a child one day. I see pregnancy as a process and it doesn't define who I am," Beatie told Winfrey.

"I feel it's not a male or female desire to have a child. It's a human need. I'm a person and I have the right to have a biological child."

Beatie was impregnated with sperm from a donor. His wife, Nancy, inseminated him at home with a device she said was like a syringe without the needle. They bought it from a veterinarian and it is typically used to feed birds.

He has an intact vagina, but he he did not say how he would deliver the baby.

Beatie, who was born Tracy, said he first felt he was trapped in the wrong body when he was in his 20s. He quickly went from a Miss Teen Hawaii USA finalist to taking testosterone and growing a beard.

"Sexuality is completely different than your gender," he said, responding to a question about why he did not remain a lesbian woman. "I felt more comfortable being the male gender."

"It was difficult for society to respect the way I felt inside if I didn't look like a man outside. I started wearing men's clothes and people started regarding me as a man."

Despite having two adult children from her first marriage, Nancy said she could no longer have children because she had her uterus removed.

"It wasn't difficult because I can't have children," Nancy said. "I had endometriosis and they had to remove my womb, therefore I don't have a womb."

Beatie and Nancy tried to conceive once before with him carrying the child, but the pregnancy was unsustainable because the fertilized egg had implanted outside of the uterus.

If he was serious about being trapped in the wrong body, he'd have turned that V into a P and gotten on with it. I mean, what is that? Trapped in the wrong body? The only thing different now is he doesn't have boobs and he can grow facial hair.

And my biggest question is - who the fuck is the father?

This was just on Oprah here yesterday and I was thinking he should be just about ready to give birth now. So I googled it (don't you just love google, seriously where would we be without it?) and he still has 6 weeks to go.

I am dubious though, it looks real enough but there's no dates on anything. I am sure in light of the other Pregnant "man" there would have been more press for this guy who is actually a man.

This is totally messed up. How selfish is this person? Hormones have an effect on a growing fetus. Excess testosterone is NOT something that a fetus is designed to be exposed to, yet this person decided to expose this innocent being to drugs because they decided it's o.k? If he/she wanted to be a man, then get on with it, but you don't do it half-way. That is someone who never should have been reassigned.

I'm fine with people getting sex changes if they really feel it will make them happy, but I deeply suspect this guy doesn't know what the hell he wants.

Pregnant Man Expecting Second Child


Thomas Beatie, the controversial "pregnant man" who gave birth to a daughter earlier this year, reveals to Barbara Walters in an exclusive interview that he is pregnant again with his second child.

Thomas Beatie, a transgender, welcomed a baby girl, Susan, June 29. Since sharing the story of Susan's birth with ABC News, he and his wife, Nancy Beatie, hadn't spoken to the media until they sat down last month with Walters.

Thomas Beatie, who is in his first trimester, tells Walters he did not go back on the male hormone testosterone after Susan's birth so he could have another baby.

"I feel good," he said. "I had my checkups with my hormone level, as far as the HCG. And everything is right on track." He says the baby is due June 12.

Thomas Beatie also spoke to Walters about Susan's birth, which was not via Caesarean section. He was in labor for 40 hours; Nancy Beatie cut the umbilical cord.

I know I am a cynic, but I think he's done this interview for more publicity. Raising kids is expensive, there hasn't been an interview in a few months and now there's another bub on the way, some more money could come in handy, maybe some free stuff thrown in?

Especially as he's only in the first trimester. Every mother knows it's bad luck to tell anyone until the 2nd trimester, maybe close family, but not the world.

Am I being to cynical? I always think the worst in these situations.

I just hate the way this is presented. Pregnant man? He's biologically a woman. Just because she wants to be a man, and takes hormones to look likes a man she still has female parts. They make it sounds like a biologically born male person with no female parts is having a baby. It's just not true. Very misleading.

Hey, this is a man! A man with a vagina and uterus. So wait, it is a woman.
