Best Comedies Ever- Your Top 10 List

I was watching some channel a few weeks ago, maybe VH1, and they had the top 100 comedies of all time or something like that.

I agreed with it for the most part, but as these 'list' shows go there is a lot of debate.

I figured we can post our favorite comedies here, maybe a Top 10 list.

This is particularly tough for me. Comedy is easily my favorite genre. Some people like scary movies, others prefer romance, drama... I love to laugh.

So to find 10 of my favorite comedies is easy, but ranking them is like Sophie's Choice.

For me, the top 3 is a clear cut choice. But as you go down the list movies made in the last 5 years or so start to creep in. I don't want to bump some aging comedy just because the humor out of date.

And what to you base it on? How funny it was for its time? How it stands up as time goes on? How much you quote it? And what's better, dry wit or slapstick raunchy humor? Tongue-in-cheek or dick and fart?

Then again, it's just a lame list so I probably shouldn't over think it, eh?

But I would be remiss not to give some notable movies that easily crack my Top 20 and could move in to the Top 10 one day: Spies Like Us, Plane, Trains and Automobiles, Uncle Buck, 40-Year-Old Virgin, Three Amigos, Liar, Liar, Ace Ventura, Young Frankenstein, Naked Gun, Police Academy, Blazin Saddles and Spaceballs.

I'd put Airplane much higher on my list. Probably number one. I'm not a big fan of Caddyshack either, or the Big Lebowski and a couple of others. Blazing Saddles would probably go way up on my list somewhere.

I'd say nothing with Goldie Hawn in it. Or Steve Martin (except maybe the Pink Panther flick, though that's not top 10 material). Or Will Ferrell. Or anybody of the later generation SNL, really.

I like a lot of the old Danny Kaye comedies as well, but I can't quite remember which is my favorite. Some of them are hilarious.

Oh, Waynes World will definitely be on there somewhere, and Monty Python's Life Of Brian. Or Meaning Of Life, I can't quite decide. Maybe both.

I'm not adventurous enough to do up a definitive top 10 list, though. Too much pressure.

Oh, hard question. Have to think a little bit. Some movies that I think are hysterical aren't technically meant to be comedies, but hell, it's fun living inside my head. I can probably reel off a couple, and #1 is always #1....

I like romantic comedies, but for some reason... I've just never liked When Harry Met Sally. I'm not sure what it is, but I just "don't get it."

Young Frankenstein is so on the cusp for me.

I dig When Harry Met Sally, but for my dime I think it's too much of a romantic comedy therefore it lends itself to the dramatic. Not saying it's a bad choice, quite the contrary.

Raising Arizona, totally forgot. Great flick. The Cohen brothers and Farelly brothers can make some movies.

Shit, I forgot about Dumb & Dumber. I have to redo my list.

I suppose When Harry Met Sally is technically a romantic comedy, but it's the man/woman interplay between Billy and Meg that's so damn funny because it's so true! I didn't particularily like that they got together at the end, it was funnier when they just picked on each other, screaming orgasms in the deli, etc.

The mouse that roared and Little big man deserve mention. You whipper-snappers probably never heard of em :grumpy:

Totally agree. The banter between the two was great. I enjoyed the shit out of it.

I'm just such a movie nit-picker that I put When Harry Met Sally into a sub-category, but it's a full on comedy for sure.

I have the same dilemma with The Princess Bride. Is it a comedy? If so, it has to be a romantic comedy.

i'd like to add movies like when harry met sally and while you were sleeping but those are more romantic than comedy.

Groundhog Day, loved it. Bill Murray is just too funny. I just remembered My Blue Heaven with Steve Martin, god, that was just a funnyfunny movie too.

Caddyshack was pure greatness. Rodney Dangerfield, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray and Ted Knight. Get that shit out of here. So many great lines in that flick. It's funny from start to finish.

I think I remember reading somewhere that Chase didn't along with Murrary because he had replaced him on Saturday Night Live. Who knows.

I saw both of those when I was a wee lad.

I saw Little Big Man not long ago. Just seeing Dustin Hoffman looking so young he couldnt sprout hair on his chin was comedy all by itself

is that the one where he's indian? I think I saw that one.

yeah, that's it. I saw it as a small child, don't remember too much about it, cept something about torture.

If I remember right he was a white kid raised by indians. Then he goes to live with a white family, but he doesnt fit in at all

I might be remembering wrong, but I think it had some deal where he was made to wear deer bones in his nipples or something.

I think you are thinking about A Man Called Horse. It had a scene where they did the thing where they rip a hole in their chest to prove their manhood < totally unfunny movie btw
